Cut song: The Wazir’s Song

March 30th, 2008

Heather updated the lyrics section at Aladdin Central with lyrics from “The Wazir’s Song”. The song was part of an early script dating back to July 1990.

It sits in the slot where Prince Ali reprise ended up in the final film. Jafar and his sidekick parrot Sinbad are humiliating poor Aladdin during the balcony ceremony announcing Jasmine choose with ‘Prince Ali’ as her husband. Parts of Aladdin’s humiliation like the flock of birds and flies where storyboarded and used in a later Jafar song “Humiliate the Boy”. The storyboard version is on the Aladdin Special Edition.
It’s also on YouTube:

I moved all my screenshots from the TV series to Photobucket at http://s256.photobucket.com/albums/hh181/merkal_kahil/
In addition I’ve screenshots from the Enchanted Tales DVD and Enchanted Journey stored there as well.

While looking for the full version of the lost One Hundred and One Dalmatians song by the Sherman brothers, I own in Dutch on CD, brought me to BrooklynMouse’s YouTube Channel. His videos are recordings of the old LP sound played through modern PC speakers and hooked up to an Apple Mac Mini.
He shares the contents of these old “Disneyland Record” vinyl records like 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia and the classic short cartoons Disney made back in those days.

I stunned to see he has “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted on his 1964 cassette player, how did he do that? It seems he transferred the CD to his computer then recorded it on a cassette and put it in his player. He did the same for “Part of Your World, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin’s A Whole New World. And it doesn’t sound bad either but that could be tribute to the modern PC speakers.

In August 2006 I was amazed to see that a vinyl version of the Aladdin soundtrack exists. Today I’m amazed that it is still for sale and the price is very low for such rare merchandise.

Aladdin, Genie and Jasmine having a fun time

Over the previous two weeks my Aladdin collection got a lot bigger with addition of Enchanted Jasmine pillow, art nouveau Jasmine journal, a Aladdin sticker parade and Princess coloring book.

The pillow found at spot at my bed to help battle the draft. The journal went, after drooling over it for 10+ minutes, to the storage. I saved a high res-scan found at d_princesses I want to make a wallpaper of it later.
I bought both items at Ultimategifts.nl the Dutch store import’s

Jasmine journal Jasmine Enchanted Pillow

The stickerbook has a story behind it. Fifteen years have past since Aladdin was immensely populair with the kids and toystores carried lots of merchandise but anno 2008 it is rare to find any Aladdin merchandise in regular toystores that isn’t part of the Princess line.
So you can imagine my excitement to find a stickerbook at Amsterdam’s largest toystore Toys r’ Us in 2006. Sadly I didn’t had enough money on me and when I went back a few weeks later the book was gone to never return. Fast forward to yesterday, March 27 2008, I was shopping for Lego Castle sets and the Dalmatians DVD at Bart Smith, one of the two largest toystore retail chains in the country, I’ve a habit to check the coloring book section for Princess coloring books with fresh Jasmine pages. There I found this book.

The book counts 16 coloring pages with two sticker areas on each page + 2 sticker pages. All but 2 are on all those general Disney coloring page sites, one I doubt and the remaining two I’ve never seen before.
The first is the scene where Ali is holding Jasmine in his arms and the Sultan compliments him on his fine character. I’ve a litho of that exact same frame hanging on the wall. The second sticker/coloring page has Ali and Jasmine on the rooftop in China and he’s looking dreamy while she’s playing with the apple. They’re in the backburner and eventually will be added to the coloring page gallery.

The thick Princess coloring book I picked up to hails from Germany and counts 16 Aladdin coloring pages and a simalar number for the other girls. One I’ve seen online before but the rest is brand new. Each princess section tells a romantic story involing the princess love interest and her sidekicks.
Jasmine’s story begins while she’s waiting for Aladdin to pick her up for on a carpet ride. They pass the Taj Mahal before having dinner at a beautiful oasis with Genie as their waiter. After a romantic moonlight walk Aladdin gives his love a necklace and flowers before taking her back to the palace. But before he leaves the teenagers cuddle some more the garden where Genie is so touched by young love he almost hugs Rajah to death.

With 17 plus the ones from I still have laying around there are many more coloring pages coming to Streetrat in 2008.

Aladdin, Genie and Jasmine having fun

xAngelicSunshineNOTx produced an Aladdin Music Video or AMV for short using footage from the first film and the song Juliet by the short lived boyband LMNT. The video tales how Aladdin as Prince Ali flirts with Princess Jasmine.

The song is fun and upbeat but yeah it’s that typical ‘Take That” sound common in most boybands. That’s probably one of the reasons the band didn’t last long. LMNT has an indirect connections with the Aladdin TV show through Kim Possible, Kim shares her story team in with the 1994 spin-off series.

Making of A Whole New World

March 20th, 2008

I pulled the post Making of Marketplace off because I couldn’t get the layout the way I wanted. It’s sitting in my drafts until I’m with it. In the mean time I’ve got 12 stills from the clean-up version A Whole New World.

Buried deep within disc 2 of the Special Edition DVD are a few seconds of this famous Aladdin and Jasmine duet in an in-progress state. It’s the only animation segment on the disc. There’s the first time recording season with Brad and Lea but that’s everywhere on the web. I would love to see a progress reel on this scene when Aladdin is being released on Blu-ray.

Clean-up animation means that the drawings are redraw in clean smooth lines from the often rough drawings by the lead animator and his assistants. It’s the one of the last steps in the progress an animated film goes through starting at storyboard, rough animation, clean-up animation, coloring & effects.

The crew behind A Whole New World

We all know that Alan Menken wrote the music and Tim Rice penned the lyrics and that Brad Kane and Lea Salonga sing it you might also know that Kathy Altieri and her background team did all the backgrounds in the movie so A Whole New World was no exception.
In the directors commentary track it’s revealed that Scott Santoro, of the visual effects department, animated the ice clouds. It where Burny Mattson & Francis Glebas who storyboarded this sequence and so where the first to create the amazing visuals that are in the final film. Both story artists have a long history at Disney for example Burny worked in most feature films between The Rescuers (1977) and Mulan (1998) while Mr. Glebas
was attached to many films from Aladdin (1992) to Treasure Planet (2002).
Layout credits go to Rasoul Azadani’s layout team who makes as Eric Goldberg says “make you feel airborne”

Generally just one supervisor over sees the animation when the two leads are interacting allot. At least that’s from what was said on Beauty and the Beast special edition when talking about the ballroom sequence. In A Whole New World it was Jasmine’s supervisor animator Mark Henn who animated both Aladdin and Jasmine.

Now on to the stills

Gruesome Sexy

March 18th, 2008

Randomdy surfing a Disney topsites list I came to Manon Yapari’s site. She’s an amazing artist with a weak spot for everything Disney. One of her more recent drawings is the lovely Princess Jasmine as a very sexy vampiress.

Before the winter is over I want to point you to the only drawing of an Aladdin character on skates I’ve seen to date. Deviant Artist Tewateroniakwa drew Jasmine skating back in 2005.

Princess issue March 2008

March 16th, 2008

Princess March 2008 Belle Jasmine close-up
This year’s 12th Donald Duck has an advertisment for the March issue of Disney Princess Magazine with Jasmine on the cover.
It’s been a while since the last time Jas was featured on a Princess cover. The last time we saw the Arabian beauty was the December 2007 issue .

It seems Jasmine gets lesser coverage with each year passing since Princess was first published in Holland in 2004. An activity on how to make Jassy’s headband and a 4 page comic is all Jasmine gets this month. The cover image isn’t that great either it seems the artists cant get her face right that pink/purple looks very nice on her though but then again she always has purple outifts with pink accents in the DP line.
The leading lady is Belle with a comic, 2 games, 2 activities, poster and coloring pages. Mulan and Aurora get some exposure; Cindy has a comic and coloring page plus an activity or 2.

Jasmine’s comic takes place during preparations of the yearly royal parade held at the palace. Jasmine suggests holding it at the market this year, auditions are held and decorations are made. Finally parade day is here and all the rehearsing goes down the drain when the animal’s trip over each other and the artists have to run for their lives or being crushed beneath and elephant. As usual the princess saves the day and her father much embarrassment as she leads the parade dancing through Agrabah.
I send Michele scans for translation and post on her myspace.

Since we’re lacking a coloring page in this issue I made one myself. It’s from the last frame of the comic. I’ll put it in its own post later this week.

Sleeping Beauty is the star of the next issue.

I love… Muktar

March 15th, 2008
Muktar
Muktar

In the episode Genie Hunt Al Gebrac one of Genie’s former masters hires the Muktar to capture big blue so the old man can enslave our comic friend. You see when old Al was Genie’s master he wished for eternal life but he didn’t realize eternal is a very long and lonely time.
The Muktar is one of the last of his species he specializes in hunting genies because of their mutual hatred towards each other the muktars and genies have been enemies since thousands of years.

His mysterious lizard appearance, intelligence and low voice makes him one of Aladdin’s coolest and realistic enemies. Unlike Mozenrath or Abis Mal he does not want power or look for wealth nor he is a comic villain like Amin Damoola.

A search on Deviant shows that some Muktar fans have fine drawing skills. HackerCo version of the genie hunter looks allot like his cartoon version. From the same artists’ is this version.
Zimeta08 drew him with Mozenrath for mozenrath.deviantart.com. For the Disney Club Zimeta did a Muktar drawing with his ugly bird.

It’s rare that a big live orchestra does a Disney medley, it’s even rarer if that medley is from one film not mention the rarity it happens to be Alan Menken’s score and songs from Aladdin.

The Puerto Rico Symphonic orchestra did just that. Their Aladdin Suite includes all the songs and pieces of The Kiss, Jasmine Runs Away and I thought I heard a bit of To Be Free in it too. At the end the performance ends with the Cave of Wonders score. Below is a clips from The Hunchback of Notre Dame recording session in a freaking church with organ!

Laura Vlasblom and Jon van Eerd over World Goes AroundSinger and actress Laura Vlasblom (Dutch voice of Princess Jasmine) and singer, songwriter and actor Jon van Eerd (Dutch voice of Ice Efreed from the episode Of Ice and Men and Aziz from Seems Like Old Crimes) where guests at the RTL 4 afternoon magazine Apertivo this week talking about their latest musical revue World Goes Round.

For those understanding Dutch
watch the show at the site of RTL 4. For who can’t i’m afraid there aren’t subtitles.

World Goes Around is a homage to the songwriter duo John Kander en Fred Ebb responsible for classic songs like ‘Cabaret’ and ‘All that Jazz’. The show toured the U.S during Aladdin’s premiere year 1992 and was an off-Broadway show the year before. Currently it’s a popular High School play
