Last Saturday, August 16th, I attended Disney in Concert in the concert hall of Amsterdam. Perhaps you’ve never heard of it before so’ll explain a bit what’s it about. It’s a concert band, in this case the Metropole Orchestra, with 4 singers playing and singing music from Disney animated movies while clips from the films where shown on a big screen.
The show had a duration for 2 hours and where a mix of instrumental music and singing in both English and Dutch. Most of the music was from the 1980s and 1990s classics like Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and of course Aladdin. While Tangled and Frozen came along as well.
Being a Disney fanatic myself I naturally had a great time hearing especially the music preformed live by a big orchestra. I had a hard time not to sing along and sit still during the show. I’ve embedded a YouTube clip of the press event and a clip from last year’s edition.
I hope it returns next year.
Celinde Schoenmaker “Let It Go”
Last year Celinde Shoenmaker “Dat is Mijn Wens” & Freek Bartels “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King”
The Santa Monica High school Symphony Orchestra preformed the music of Aladdin in a concert a year ago. I’ve listened to it a couple of time and I’ve to say it’s the best orchestral renditions of the Aladdin suite I’ve heard.
On a related note I’m going to Disney in Concert in The Royal concert hal in Amsterdam this August 17. Conducted by Ernst van Tiel the world famous Metropole Orchestra preforms a mixture of classic Disney music with solo performers who a an impressive resume in the Dutch and European musical. So while I enjoyed the talent of these kids on YT at home with two basic PC speakers I’m excited to hear these beautiful Disney melodies live by a professional orchestra in a concert hal.
Jim Hill editor Alex Ogle attended “An Evening with Alan Menken” back in February. I haven’t checked Jim Hill’s site for some months and didn’t come across any other mention of Alan Menken giving a concert If I had I surely had blogged about it before.
Alex mentioned how Alan Menken talked some about his old friend the way to eary lost to us genius Howard Ashman and the story of how Howard fought to keep Proud of Your Boy in the film. Alan remised that story before on the 2004 DVD and in the 1992 making of book I believe. Alan opened the evening with Beauty and the Beast and closed it A Whole New World
The BCC Radio show Friday Night is Music Night has a special of on Disney music 2 weeks ago on December 26th. The West End cast of The Lion King plus many guest preformed melodies from classic Disney films like Snowwhite, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. A Whole New World was sang by Heather Headley (1997 Broadway Nala) and Adam Pascal (98 – 00 Aida Radames). Kerry Butler also was guest to sing songs from Snowwhite and the seven dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid. On her recent CD Kerry sang the cut-song “Call Me A Princess”
There doesn’t seem to be an option on the site to listen too older shows.
